Material Selection

The FloXell is constructed using PEEK, Ultem, and PTFE, each offering distinct advantages. Ultem is our recommended material due to its balance of functionality and strength, high chemical resistance, and semi-transparency, which allows visual access to reactions at the electrodes. PEEK provides the highest mechanical strength and the longest lifespan, while PTFE, a commonly used material for flow cells, offers a smooth surface for optimal sealing. A platinum wire is incorporated for use in counter reactions, such as oxygen evolution reactions (OER).

Applications

Flow cells bridge the gap between H-cells and electrolyzers, enabling the study of half-cell reactions with three-electrode setups. The FloXell is specifically designed for carbon dioxide reduction and carbon capture studies. Additional applications include:
• Electrochemical synthesis
• Carbon capture
• Flow battery research
• Carbon reduction reaction

Assembly Features

The FloXell is designed for ease of assembly and robust operation. Slide-fit pins ensure precise alignment, while the integrated platinum electrode eliminates the need for external counter electrodes. High-resilience O-rings provide a leak-proof seal without requiring gaskets. Integrated nuts fixed within the plates simplify assembly by eliminating external nuts, and magnets embedded in the plates allow for quick and easy snap assembly. The package includes a rechargeable screwdriver to facilitate fast and hassle-free assembly and disassembly.

Design Features

Flow channels have been optimized through simulations to minimize dead volumes and ensure uniform liquid and gas flow. The FloXell is designed for vertical operation, with an angled holder that assists in the removal of gas bubbles, improving system performance and stability.

Customization

Extensive customization options are available to meet specific research or industrial needs. These include material selection, compartment volume adjustments, tailored flow pathway designs, sample size modifications, electrode configurations, and component adjustments to ensure compatibility with your experimental setup.

Holder and Electrical Connections

The FloXell includes a holder and tripod to secure its position. The angled design of the holder aids in bubble removal. Electrical connections are simplified with integrated sockets compatible with banana plugs (included in the package). Copper tape can be used for connections between the electrode and the socket, avoiding the common instability and issues associated with direct alligator clip connections to copper tape.

Tubing and Fitting

PEEK fittings are used for their chemical compatibility, electrical isolation, and ease of use. These fittings are optimized for 1/8-inch tubing connections. The package also includes 2 meters of PTFE tubing and six push-to-connect fittings.

FAQs

These the most common inquiries.

Which plate material do you recommend?

We recommend Ultem because it offers an optimal balance of various properties while also providing visibility into the reactions. This visibility facilitates troubleshooting and enhances understanding of reaction progression.

Is Pt included in the package? can we use other electrodes?

Yes, we incorporate the Pt electrode into the setup unless you request otherwise. However, even if it is included, you have the option to use it or leave it disconnected electrically and use your own electrode.

Is reference electrode included?

No, the reference electrode is not included. However, we provide the fitting and O-rings designed to properly seal a reference electrode with a diameter of approximately 4.2 mm.
